Chapter Eight

Tatiana had now begun to worry that she was going to saw down her teeth if she gritted them anymore.

She had never known such grave embarrassment when she was paired with the other trees in the play and discovered they were six-year-olds.

Phillipa had apologized profusely, and Tatiana had a hard time selling the idea that she wanted quite desperately to play the part. Because she was being blackmailed by the Wilson boys, if she got down to specifics.

And it had turned out to be a nightmare, pure and simple. The costume she was given was too small, then the other one too big. The other kids made fun of her for being a grown-up, and she stuck her tongue out at them. She had glitter thrown at her, and she couldn’t understand the concept of having trees that sparkled. Worst of all, she had to do the most humiliating dance ever right there on stage in front of everyone and their cousins in Mayhem Falls.

But that wasn’t all.

The Wilsons—pains in her ass, literally—sat front and center and witnessed her disgrace firsthand when she tripped and fell over a log that was actually another human child in costume.

Well, at least she had made Margarette happy, who was quite pleased whenever Tatiana did something that embarrassed her.

By the time the play was over, she'd had enough of this small town and wanted out of it immediately. Cursing all the way back to the house, she scrubbed off her humiliation, dragged on a dress, didn’t bother with shoes, didn’t take the time to dry her hair either and marched to their house. She didn’t care that the play had ended only an hour ago and that it was close to ten in the evening already.

She pounded on their door, then took matters into her own hands and turned the knob, shoved it open, and walked into their house.

She found them where she had left them the last time, in their living room, and she didn’t waste any time. If she was going down… again, she wasn’t going to do it without a damn fight.

Her frustration had bubbled over, and she was highly stressed out about so many things. Her family, for one. She needed to get them out of Moscow even though her father would hear nothing of it, and wanted to die in the land he was born in. But there was no guarantee that the Gribovs would take the Fabergé egg and release her family only to pull them back in again. Having the Annikov name linked to them was a card they wanted to continue playing. No. All she could rely on was that the relic was going to give them only a tiny window to escape.

She was worried about failing entirely, of not being able to retrieve the object that would grant her family their freedom.

She hated that the Wilson boys had practically blackmailed her into taking part in Phillipa’s play, when she said she didn’t want to, and then them being there to see her fall face-first in a tangle of felt leaves right on the stage.
